Loving: The way our home smells... Like fresh pine and baked goods.
Not loving: Unexpected visits from the last person you'd want to stop by.

Listening to: The Ramsey Lewis Trio.

Reading: Blogs on blogging. Go figure.

Wearing: This would make week 2 of ratty pajamas. I should probably attempt to do this post at a different time of the day. I should also probably attempt to invest in some cute sleep wear.

Craving: Another sip of coffee.

Wanting: To go back to the beach for a day or two.

Needing: To clean off my desk and re-organize my clothes, shoes and bags.

Looking forward to: Starting my 5 in 4 plan.

In The Kitchen: Thinking about making a Grand Ma cake for Sunday.

In the closet: Eyeing a few more pairs of Minnetonka's. My moccasins have been my go-to shoes this winter.

Around town: This weekend it will probably a stop at my beloved flea market (that has been around for as long as I can remember and will be closing next year) and a drive out to a local citrus grower to pick some fresh fruit. Maybe we will go watch the old timers that get together and play live jazz every Sunday.

Wishing for: A drama free weekend, holiday, life in general. When you have a big family, no news is good news.

Thankful for: The view in the photos above. That park, which is minutes from where we live, would be my happy place. I always leave there feeling a better than when I arrived.

Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself. ~ Rita Mae Brown
Isn't that the truth...

I have been thinking a lot about how I want to get healthy again. This is spurred on by many things... A general need to not feel like crap all of the time,  A closet full of BEAUTIFUL clothes that no longer fit (but could if I just lost a bit of weight), a few women I'd love to one up (you all know exactly what I'm talking about). But the main reason is - I'm ready (the true key).

A few things you should know about me:

I am trained to teach people how to make positive health related changes so that they can lead a better quality of life. In the past I have worked hands on with several wonderful doctors. I've even worked with the local news on a biggest loser type of segment. I know my stuff... I just haven't been practicing what I preach.

I really enjoy cooking, baking and eating food.  Are you seeing the conflict?

My boyfriend and I decided to move in together and combine our families a little over 6 years ago. This has been a huge positive on so many levels. I have the big family I've always dreamed of (even better, they like my cooking). The only negative has been a slow, steady weight gain on my part (complacency leads to depression... total domino effect).

About 5 in 4:

I am proposing a monthly challenge of losing 5 pounds in 4 weeks. This is a realistic number and completely do-able. In fact, if you are disciplined, you will probably lose more than 5 pounds in the 4 week period.  This is the kind of plan where the only way you can fail is if you don't try.

The link up for this challenge will begin in January 2015. The first Monday of each month I will be logging goals I'd like to achieve, how much weight I've lost, what kind of exercise I've done, any differences in physical symptoms (a few examples: fatigue, mood swings, sleep habits), how I handled cravings, how many inches lost, and anything else I can think of.
If you choose to partake in the challenge, feel free to write about your goals/results any way you'd like.  (If you are brave enough to start with a before photo then go for it!
Along with each update I will be offering pointers on eating clean, exercise, stress reduction and nutraceuticals (vitamins).

Lastly, I will be tackling how to balance a love of food with living healthy. I am VERY open to advice on this.

There is no pressure to follow me however if you decide to partake in the challenge please link back to Southern Ways

The reason I prefer to chip away at the pounds as opposed to a rapid loss system:

1.) Steady weight loss is easier to maintain long term.
2.) Rapid weight loss is BAD FOR YOU... Your muscle mass deteriorates, your hair falls out, your skin looks sallow, your energy level drops, your breath stinks... I could go on and on and get in to  more complex things like cell health and how you are taxing your system but I wont (maybe at a later date).
3.) Giving yourself small goals that are achievable is a great way to boost your confidence and keep you motivated.

If you feel like getting a head start:
December is, hands down, the hardest month to diet which is why I'm not going to beat myself up over it. Although, I might make things easier on myself by taking one less cookie or cutting a smaller slice of pie.  :)

Monthly Goals: Simplify

I just stumbled on to a link up over at Not Entirely Perfect (a blog I silently stalk ... not creepy at all) that revolves around monthly goals. I am a goal setter / list maker / anal about (trying to) keep some order - so "Choose Your Own Adventure" monthly goal setting is a perfect fit for me.

The theme this month is simplify.

I plan on doing this by:

1. Not breaking my back making a huge Christmas brunch for my equally huge family. Instead we will order meat and cheeses, Black Forest cake, stollen (German sweet bread), brotchen and other assorted goodies from a popular specialty market here in town. Financially, this cost less than buying a bunch of groceries. Time wise- it's a no brainier. Taste wise- it's better than anything I could whip up.

2. Christmas shopping - I already have the bulk of it done (thank you Cyber Monday). This leaves stocking stuffers which we've decided to keep simple and practical (gift cards and pre-made bags of candy from Aldi).

3. Social engagements - I am too old to try and please everyone so holiday parties will come down to whether or not we are in the mood to go. No point in stressing out over something like this. Real friends will understand and grant you space if and when you need it.

It's not, directly, about what she's wearing- it's about how laid back and confident she is. Shots taken in the middle of St. Augustines always busy old town market area.

B.B.B. Chocolate Chip Cookies

Brown butter bourbon chocolate chip cookies.... With a touch of sea salt sprinkled on top. Yes, they are as rich as they sound.

In the off chance you weren't aware, Southerners love(eee) to booze up their food, especially around the holidays. This time around I took a my go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe and made a few adjustments. I browned the butter before adding it to the sugar mix and followed it with bourbon to taste (3 teaspoons and a splash). I highly recommend tasting after each teaspoon. Some people like less and some people like more.

Regarding your little ones: Sometimes kids do not care for (pitch a fit) changes in regards to their sugar fix. Especially if they have been waiting all day for homemade cookies. If this is a legitimate fear, I suggest omitting the alcohol in the main mix and, instead, soaking raisins, walnuts or pecans in the good stuff for a few hours (to overnight) and set aside some cookie dough to mix them in with. This way the kids get a traditional cookie and the adults get one with more layers to the flavor.

Enjoy!
